The chart clearly illustrates the striking decline of rural poverty in China from 2012 to 2020. During this period, the rural poor population plunged from around 98 million to nearly zero, while the incidence of poverty fell in parallel from about 10.2% to almost 0%. Based on official statistics, this downward trend remained remarkably steady throughout the whole period.

Several factors account for this remarkable achievement.
